A Long Time Ago is Just Like Today is one of several titles carried by Oyate from the Duluth Indian Education Advisory Committee. The book combines traditional Chippewa stories, recalled in the elders own words, biographical reminiscences and instructions for some cultural practices. It is a rich and important collection.

(From the author) Listening to Chippewa people tell the legends and histories of their culture, it became evident that the voice of the people themselves presented a most important record of living values deserving publication. The variety of subject matter, a range as wide as human experience, attest to the vital and integrating quality of Chippewa traditions. The fact that these traditions are being nurtured and taught to the young attests to the strength and attraction of self-determination for Chippewa people.

Throughout this book one finds repeated references to respect—respect for nature, for elders, for family. In my experience among the Chippewa I am continually reminded that without proper thankfulness, one’s pride will turn against oneself. In the presentation of this book I hope this attitude has been realized, for I am grateful beyond words for the experience that enabled me to hear these words spoken.
