“You will reach the far-off land if you keep hope alive within you.” The words of Magic Frog give courage to the young mouse on his long and perilous journey to reach the wonderful land of legend. He faces many obstacles on his quest and sacrifices much to help others in need. The mouse’s compassion and faith in himself prove to be a source of great power and bring him rewards even beyond his dreams.

The Story of Jumping Mouse is an exquisitely written and illustrated story. It has become a classic in children’s literature, and is an ALA (American Library Association) Notable Book and a Caldecott Honor Book. Its pages are broad and inviting: bursting with life-sized sketches of critters that guide the reader’s journey. It is not only artfully illustrated, but also a valuable, uplifting moral lesson in treating every stranger as a potential friend.

John Lewis Steptoe illustrated 15 picture books (of which he wrote ten) in his 20-year career, many of them dealing with aspects of the African American experience. Steptoe hoped that his books would lead children to feel pride in their origins and in who they are. He died in 1989 following a long illness.
